Carte blanche apparently means the "permission to do something in any way you choose to do it" (Merriam-Webster dictionary.) When writing this post, I was thinking more along the lines of blank slate, fresh start. But hey, it actually works. It is a new year (Happy New Year!) and we will slough off the old and forge a new path into 2014. Maybe we will want to retain some of the old habits. Maybe we will want to try something totally different.
Time beats on, life goes on (*like boats against the current...) What do I want? What do you want? Is it something tangible like a new car? Is it something you can't quite articulate into words? Is it a virtue or characteristic like being more honest?
Personally, I want to be more hopeful, more authentic, and more courageous. I think they're all messily tied together. At the root of it, I want to have the courage to be hopeful and comfortable with being myself (authenticity.)
The key to accomplishing one's goals (as I learned in grad school) is to have measurable tasks. So... maybe that means coming up with a script of things to tell myself each day, maybe that means setting challenges for myself to talk to that one person who seems like they would be a good friend. I'm not sure at this point.
What I do know is, I can't do it alone. None of us can. We need people. We need more Jesus. He's good at giving courage. He's good at giving hope. And he certainly wants us to feel comfortable in our own skin. Amen.
