There's something about Summer-esque weather that takes me back to my first Summer on the job. The humid air, knowing that more than 5 minutes outside will form beads of sweat, the students starting to slowly dissipate. I'm back to July of 2008.
I was overwhelmed with my first real "job-job" (and realizing that I wouldn't have the extended Summer break of yesteryear), responsibilities, and settling down in a new town as a permanent resident - not just a nomad as I was more inclined.
Back then, I was more practical and packed a lunch everyday. I walked to the Aquatics & Fitness Center down the road and sat at a table underneath an umbrella. It was really hot outside, but it was a welcome change to the Arctic blast of an air-conditioned office.
I read "To Kill a Mockingbird" that Summer and fell in love with Atticus Finch all over again. I would talk to my mom on the phone and she would reassure that I would learn everything that I needed to learn - a new job takes time.
Thank you for reminding me that I still haven't read that book. It shall be on my summer reading list now.
ReplyDeleteIsn't is strange how quickly time passes once you have a real job-job? When I moved to Cville, I was like, "I can pictures myself doing this for 3-5 years; past that, it's all unknown," and I'm about to hit the five year mark.
